White Paper Synopsis

DSDM and CBD are inter-dependent processes. DSDM depends on CBD for a supply of pluggable components. CBD depends on DSDM to develop software in timely fashion, prior to certification as components. DSDM emphasises a business-driven development culture that is fast becoming characteristic of successful software development.

Components must be seen as useful from a business point of view. Any project that uses CBD within the context of DSDM will keep the project focussed on business goals and ensure that business members are comfortable with the principles

This white paper outlines three CBD scenarios: revolution, evolution and assembly. In the revolutionary approach, corporate modelling is followed by the building of all components and then solution assembly.

In the evolutionary approach, scope partitioning is followed by solution development and then the harvesting of components. In the assembly approach, components are identified, purchased and assembled into solutions.
CBD involves adding infrastructure activities to the basic DSDM lifecycle. This consolidates common themes that run through each scenario.

The infrastructure activities, such as component planning and management, leave the existing DSDM lifecycle unaltered, simply wrapping the new CBD infrastructure activities around it.
For each scenario, additional products and roles are defined and a tailored DSDM Suitability Filter is used to highlight the key risks to be addressed.

The many new roles include those of the Component Programme Manager, Assessor, Certifier and Librarian. Not all of the additional roles are required in each scenario, so guidance as to staffing the CBD infrastructure for each scenario are provided.

The paper details additional issues such as funding models and some ways of justifying the costs of creating the necessary CBD infrastructures.
