White Paper Synopsis
For the majority of the White Paper, it is assumed that DSDM is the framework of choice for the project but that there are parts of the system which are to be developed using waterfall approaches. However, there is some discussion of fitting DSDM into projects where DSDM is not the prime method of development. The assumption is also that all projects will have applied the Suitability Filter when deciding to use DSDM.
There are circumstances in which it may be necessary or appropriate to use both waterfall and agile techniques within a single project.
There are three cases identified and discussed:
1. The project starts following a waterfall lifecycle but for some reason it is decided that aspects of DSDM would be of benefit.
2. The project starts in the expectation of using DSDM throughout but it transpires at some stage during the project that it should be done using a traditional waterfall approach
3. The project is suitable in part for DSDM but in another part to require a traditional approach which will run in parallel. This is classed as a hybrid project for the purposes of this paper.
For each of these cases, points of safe cutover from one approach to the other are defined, the impact on products such as design documentation and the integration of the two approaches are discussed. There are issues to do with the user involvement in the different streams of development, project management issues including possibly different approaches to change requests in the two approaches, as well as organisation management issues.
Suitable project structures are defined together with the additional or different responsibilities to be assigned to the DSDM roles of Visionary, Ambassador User, Project Manager, Technical Co-ordinator, Developer and Tester.
The impact on both general products such as Quality Plans and the DSDM products is assessed in the paper and any changes that must be made to DSDM products are defined.
